The Wedding of Natalie Plaisted & Dustin Koziuk – Rembrandt’s Coffee House

January 14, 2010

With a successful 2009 loaded with exciting weddings in the bag, Steve Smith Weddings is ready to take on the 2010 year with an enduring sense of enthusiasm. January 10, kicked off the much anticipated 2010 year with a lovely little wedding at Rembrandt’s Coffee House in Eagle, Idaho. I have always adored Rembrandt’s converted church space as a place to sit back and enjoy a delicious cup of their fair trade, organic coffee. It was a real treat to find out that this space could be flipped into an idyllic church setting to hold a wedding while still maintaining it’s creative modern flair.

I started off the day with a few exterior shots before heading into the dressing rooms to catch the tail end of the bridal party getting ready.

Alexis Asher & Dax McIntosh Wedding – 1300 Block of Warm Springs Blvd., Boise

August 25, 2009

You never know where you might meet your future wife/husband. It could happen at the grocery store, on a run, through a friend, on an airplane, or maybe even your next door neighbor. Believe it or not, Alexis Asher and Dax McIntosh’s parents just so happened to live right next door to one another on the historic Warm Springs Blvd. in Boise, ID. It may sound too good to be true but I assure you that this was the real deal. Dax’s gregarious and extremely kindhearted personality makes for an idyllic match to Alexis’s caring and considerate demeanor. I was positively delighted to be able to be a part of yet another amazing couple’s wedding.

An offbeat low pressure weather system brought cool, comfortable temperatures that would kick August 15th of to a pleasant start. Blue skies and 75* temperatures greeted me as I arrived at Alexis’s parents house. This was where the gals gathered for some pre-wedding touch-ups.

Dax and the rest of the guys eagerly awaited their turn for group photos. This was one of my favorites.

005_MG_9840

Regardless of which culture, religious affiliation or country of origin the couple represents, traditional elements make their way into the wedding to one degree or another.” Having the bride and groom see one another before the ceremony is one such tradition that can often be a hot topic. Steve Smith Weddings is happy to respect any wishes. However, we do find it easier, if willing, to have the bride and groom see one another before the ceremony for pictures. In order to maintain some sense of surprise and glory behind seeing your bride/groom to be, we can stage a “reveal”. This reveal gives the bride and groom an opportunity to build up that sense of anxiousness and emotion for seeing one another for the first time in their wedding attire. I set Dax at the edge of Alexis’s parent’s walkway where he eagerly awaited the reveal of his beautiful bride. Dax’s face was priceless as he slowly turned around for that first glimpse. He wasted no time and quickly ran up for a loving kiss.

Guests gathered for the ceremony between 5:30 and 6:00 while the families and wedding party went through their last minute preparatory motions. The ceremony kicked off without a hitch. It was short, sweet and over within a mere ten minutes.

After a few family shots, the ceremony moved from Dax’s mom and step father’s house over to Alexis’s parent’s house for the reception. The wedding parties made a grand entrance before mingling and enjoying a delicious meal prepared by Kanak Attack Catering. After the guests had a chance to fill their bellies with food it was time for the toasts. These toasts went above and beyond any toasts that I have experience thus far. Dax’s best man Joey Milan started things out. His fluid well rehearsed speech left little room left to imagine what other praise could be said in addition regarding this amazing new couple. Yet, low and behold each and every speaker that followed brought something insightful and moving to say about Alexis and Dax. Alexis’s sister Camille Asher brought tears to a myriad of people’s eyes including her own. Her father, Steve Asher followed in her footsteps. Dax’s father LJ and step father Mike completed the circle with words of wisdom and praise. Dax closed things out with his own flair by giving a toast to everyone who was gracious enough to join them on their wedding day. At the end of it all I was left with a stir of emotions and a greater understanding of how very special these two were to their friends and families.

It was now time for the party to start. Alexis and Dax were asked to take the stage for their “first dance”.

Following their first dance came the father-daughter dance and the mother-son/step mother-son dance.

In a bit of a nontraditional fashion, Alexis opted not to throw her bouquet out to a mass of single ladies. Instead, she wanted to honor Dax’s grandmother, Esther Linford by presenting her with the bouquet.

At many weddings, the DJ will ask the married couples to join the newlyweds on stage for a dance that aims to figure out which couple has been married the longest. We grabbed a quick shot of all the partners before the dance commenced.

When the couples dance had concluded, all the attendees were asked to bust out their best moves.

Amidst the dancing came my favorite part of the night. Best man Joey Milan and groom Dax gave the guests a surprise performance of Criss Cross’s rap duet entitled “Jump”. Dax and Joey knew every word to a T and brought an incredible stage performance that had everyone on their feet. Next time you see the two of them, hit them up for a little taste. I promise, you won’t be disappointed.

Kallie Wren & Curtis Crandal Wedding – Lucile, Idaho

July 29, 2009

Destination weddings are by far my favorite nuptial events to photograph. They provide limitless opportunities ranging from a weekend away from the usual routine to really getting to know people who may be new acquaintances or even long time friends. The weekend of July 24 – 26th was one such destination wedding that I will not soon forget. My friends Kallie Wren and Curtis Crandal chose the banks of the Salmon River in Lucile, Idaho (three hours north of Boise) as their espousal setting. Lucile sits nestled deep in a canyon near Riggins where the confluence of the Salmon River and the Little Salmon River lies. This quaint location is a hotspot for fishing, hunting and my personal favorite, white water rafting. I was super stoked that Kallie and Curtis were able to bring together such a great group of people in a gorgeous little spot for their special day.

I arrived mid day on Friday with just enough time to scout out the locations before sneaking in a quick raft trip down the Salmon. One hundred degree temperatures made the cool river waters incredibly inviting. The eight mile stretch is a rather mellow run similar to the Main Payette offering up a few decent rapids that are sure to kick up some water. Three hours of relaxation was just what the doctor had ordered. We arrived back at the Riggins Motel to find the brunt of the younger crowd freshening up and preparing for a night out on the town.

Our evening had us checking out the local fare at Seven Devil’s Steak House and enjoying some live music down at the Rodeo Club. It was a rockin good time.

Another bright sunny day slowly began to warm the valley as guests arose to the sound of coffee makers dripping. Round two of rafting awaited everyone who was adventurous enough and had time to spare before the ceremony. I opted to stay and prepare for the days events back at the hotel. I was able to make time for a quick trip to one the Salmon’s countless sandy beaches for a nice swim. The refreshing waters kicked me right into high gear before the afternoons events.

By 3:00pm I was dressed and ready for action. I began at the Motel where a few of the bridesmaids and the majority of the groomsmen were preparing. From there we hopped on the shuttle bus bound for Lucile. We arrived to family and wedding parties bustling around as they finished getting ready.

The long awaited reveal of Kallie came as no surprise. Her jaw-dropping good looks stopped Curtis in his tracks as he watched the bride-to-be descend elegantly down the stairs.

012_MG_7170

013_MG_7174

It was clearly evident that these two were madly in love. The two sat there embracing one another for quite some time. I had to coax Curtis into letting me take Kallie away for a few pictures of her with her bridesmaids.

Glistening with sweat from the blazing summer sun, Kallie found the nearest fan for a pre wedding cool down.

029_MG_7350

The tranquil sound of rushing water echoed in the background as the ceremony began. Curtis sat anxiously with his back to the Salmon River as he waited for his bride to accompany him. Glimmering rays of sunlight fell across Kallie’s face as her father Rob escorted her down the aisle. Kallie was graciously handed over to an eager Curtis by Rob and the wedding ceremony was all but ready to commence. But wait, there was a surprise guest entrance. Since Curtis couldn’t bring their dogs to the ceremony, Kallie took the liberty of blowing up two photos of their pups and had them marched down the aisle to accompany them. Now the ceremony was officially ready to begin. Papa Dick spoke touching words of wisdom to Kallie & Curtis before they went on to exchange their own handwritten vows. Each was creative and heartwarming but Kallie one upped Curtis with a bit of an inside story at their ongoing competitive nature. She passed along a $20 bill that had been bet back and forth since high school. Smiles spread across the audience as Curtis reluctantly took the $20 back. Before exchanging rings they were treated to a heartwarming song played by Kallie’s cousin and uncle. It just so happened  that Kallie’s cousin was the Grammy nominated pop singer-lyricist, Stacie Orrico. Her soothing yet powerful voice brought tears to several of the attendees. Still wiping tears from her eyes, Kallie extended her hand to receive her beautiful ring. Kallie presented Curtis with his after a bit of nervous fumbling. To close, those long awaited words, “you may now kiss the bride” came from Papa Dick’s mouth. Curtis wasted no time with a classy kiss before being presented as Mr. and Mrs. “Randal” (ask Curtis about the inside joke).

A short while after the ceremony had concluded, guests were invited to the reception just down the road. The location was “Bob’s House”, a family friend of the Wrens with a beautiful spread over looking the river complete with an expansive lawn and stone laid dance floor. A delicious feast consisting of pasta salad, veggies, red potatoes, grilled chicken and even a whole roasted pig brought water to the guests mouths as they sat anxiously in line. Everyone was given ample time to enjoy the succulent meal before asked to grab drinks in preparation for the toasts. Curtis’s best man and uncle, Tyson, was first up to bat. He managed to stay calm and collected with every word he spoke. Next came Kallie’s sisters Megan and Addie. Each gave praise to Curtis and affectionate remarks to Kallie.

Not soon forgetting his mother, Curtis headed back to the dance floor for his mother-son dance.

Friends and family were invited to the dance floor to join in on the action. A group collaboration of “Shout!” made for a fun shot.

082_MG_7869

A reception isn’t complete without the bouquet and garter toss. Curtis gave Kallie a little show before heading commencing the search for that frilly band hidden on Kallie’s leg. Once the garter had been tossed, DJ One One asked the garter-catcher to place the garter on the bouquet-catcher’s leg. Here’s the catch, they switched the female bouquet-receiver for one of the groomsmen. Let’s just say the guy was a little confused..
